Design AFTER demolition? Yes, that's right! For this small 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, it became clear after demolition that the original kitchen design would not work. So with a lot of trust from our out-of-state client, we ditched the old plan and started anew, with the recently-discovered obstacles providing fresh motivation for the design. The decision proved to be a good one, as the new kitchen now has even more storage, including a pantry which almost makes up for the loss of a second coat closet. Surprisingly, these types of discoveries are actually quite common for designers, but when taken as opportunities instead of threats the end result is most often better than originally expected.
